The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

Celebrating the grandeur of a romantic history, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has been transformed from a neoclassical landmark built in 1928, The Fullerton Building, into a magnificent luxury stay for worldly travellers who appreciate attention to detail and preservation of the past. This heritage hotel is iconic in the fact that the structure once housed the General Post Office, The Exchange and the esteemed Singapore Club – all of which played critical roles in the historical development of the island.

A limousine transfer from the airport is an adept way to arrive to this monumental piece of history. Arranged at the same time as our reservation confirmation, we were guaranteed a uniformed escort at arrivals and a swift transfer to our destination. Chauffeured by a well-mannered driver in a Mercedes E-class 200, provisioned with mineral water and the daily periodicals, we experienced a comfortable final leg of our journey.

Fantastically positioned for both business and fun, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is in the heart of the central business district and walking distance to shopping, dining and entertainment hubs. The popular restaurant and bar scene of Boat Quay is minutes away in a cab, while the Marina Bay Shops, Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, Asian Civilisations Museum and the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay are all within walking distance. For those who’d prefer not to brave the heat, complimentary shuttle services transfer guests to shopping hotspots and key business buildings at regular intervals. The MRT further connects guests with wider Singapore.

A great orientation to the area is provided with The Fullerton Heritage Trail and Complimentary Guided Tour. A resident historian leads participants on a route through nearby historical points of interest including the former main foyer of the General Post Office, Post Bar, the Straits Room (previously the Billiard Room of the exclusive Singapore Club) and The Lighthouse (now a rooftop restaurant, but formerly the location housing the beacon which guided ships to Singapore’s shores). Alternatively a Maritime Journey Tour shares with in-residence guests the colourful history of the Fullerton Heritage buildings, which are part of Singapore’s famed waterfront.

Rooms

Holding 400 rooms and suites a number of different categories cater to various budgets and needs. Rooms either overlook the atrium courtyard or have vast vistas of the city skyline, river or sea.

Our Straits Club Quay Room boasted magnificent water views from the almost floor to ceiling window. Interior design is fresh and contemporary, yet breathes an old world appeal and grace. Various shades of cream keep the room light and bright, while teak furniture, although modern in design, adds Asian charm.

The room is compact but had all we need. Wardrobe, mini-bar, high definition TV, high-speed Internet, desk and a very comfortable bed compose the living area. Separate toilet, shower and bathtub form a generous area for the bathroom. The use of giant mirrors enlarges the space even further and, a thoughtful movable magnifying mirror allowed us to check that make-up, hair and clothing were perfectly in order, from all angles, before exiting.

The consideration of small details had us wowed. A shoe polishing service sees collection and return of shoes through a discreet nook in the closet. A weighing scale is provided, but so too is a small-sized stepper for exercise. If the numbers on the scale shock you, you can do something about it straight away ;-). Toiletries smell wonderful and when we took a closer look, we discovered the brand Bvlgari - further proof The Fullerton Hotel values the finer points.

Food and Beverage

Our Straits Club Quay Room had access to club benefits. The Club is split-level and divided into four sections, making one large space intimate. Our preferred perch was an elegant drawing room, featuring dark Asian wood furniture with a couple of dining tables for two and a low sofa and coffee table.

Champagne breakfast, beverages throughout the day, afternoon tea and evening cocktails were all complimentary during our stay. The selection is not extravagant but it is sufficient enough that a light eater might very well consume all they need here without necessity to leave.

Pressing of two pieces of clothing per day, two-hour use of the meeting room, use of a DVD player and complimentary local calls are also included in Straights Club rooms.

Numerous other food and beverage outlets deliver a range of experiences within the hotel: Jade offers modern Chinese; Town Restaurant is the all-day-dining option serving international fare; The Courtyard is renowned for its afternoon tea and chocolate buffet; and Post Bar is a trendy place to sip on a cocktail or grab a light bite.

Marina Bay Light Show as viewed from the Fullerton Hotel
The Lighthouse Restaurant and Rooftop Bar however is known for having some of the most sought-after views in the city, so that’s where we chose to spend our Saturday evening. Located on the exact spot where a beacon formerly guided mariners to the protection of Singapore’s port in the eighteenth century, the rooftop bar overlooks the Marina Bay waterfront with dreamy views of the dazzling skyline. It’s an exclusive and much sought after location for the city’s spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks, but also nightly for the Marina Bay Light Show. Authentic Southern Italian cuisine features specialties from Campania, Sardinia and Sicily. Read about what we tried and wouldrecommend here.

Facilities

A morning (or early evening) run around nearby Marina Bay is a gorgeous way to start the day. Local tourist maps provide routes for a number of trails. Gardens by the Bay, part of the F1 route, a jog along the riverside – all begin steps from The Fullerton Hotel.

During inclement weather however, a well-equipped gym with a large number of cardio machines, free weights and strength machines had all we needed. Hubby, loving a good sweat, took full advantage of the sauna and steam room reporting satisfaction with both.

Giant Greek style columns (reminiscent of the Parthenon) provide a dramatic backdrop for the infinity pool overlooking Singapore city. Dotted with white umbrellas and stunted tropical palms, it casts a silhouette of the enduring elegance of the romantic past, contrasting the rapid development seen in the views beyond.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore went above and beyond our expectations and our only regret is that we didn’t allow a few more nights to appreciate this treasure.

Reasons to visit:location, location, location!; good club provisions including Champagne breakfast; a monumental heritage property.
