Harbour City - It's starting to look a lot like Christmas

Harbour City Hong Kong

It’s no small feat being the largest and best-reputed shopping mall in a city renowned for infinite procurement pleasures such as is the case in Hong Kong. Harbour City however is just that. With over 450 shops, 50 food and beverage outlets, two cinemas, three hotels, 10 office buildings, two serviced apartments and a luxurious private club all housed in 185 000 square metres of prime real estate, it’s must-visit destination.

You could possibly spend weeks exploring the treasures under Harbour City’s roof, but our time is limited, and we have clear passions so we hit some restaurants, pamper ourselves with a spa session, and stay a few nights in one of the on-site luxury hotels.

Where to Stay

Positioned perfectly to take advantage of all the attraction has to offer, is Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel. Composed of 665 guestrooms ranging from 42 square metres up to a spacious 150 square metres, this five star hotel offers classic high-quality design, superb service and harbour views. Where to Eat and Drink

Michelin stars have a funny way of grabbing our attention, especially when there’s a trio of them awarded. L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon has gained this prestigious honour in both locations in Hong Kong and Macau. Building on the high standard of food and service, the concept has spread further afield, making the brand more accessible to the average diner in the more casual (and affordable) version, LE CAFÉ de Joël Robuchon. With a menu catering to all desires, from hearty meals to sandwiches, coffee and cake available for dining-in or takeaway, shoppers can make a stop anytime of the day and be satisfied. We chose to linger with a meal and a glass of wine or two. Check out our recommendations here.

Sparkling Rose - L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon

Delicious Italian fare is found at Cucina, and the breathtaking backdrop of Victoria Harbour, viewed from its glass walls and al fresco patio, place it firmly at the upper end of the list of restaurants with some of the finest views in Kowloon. ‘Pure Italian’ cuisine and expert wine pairings are things to be excited about. Rose Bakery, Page One

Page One is a new concept store, which encompasses, not only an enormous selection of books, but furniture, gifts, aromatherapy products, children’s toys, a restaurant and bakery too. Primarily known for its interesting assortment of publications, dark wood furniture, tiny green mosaic floor tiles, and rows and rows of books, compose an almost magical Harry Potter feel in this section. It’s a place that you’ll want to set aside a few hours to wander through. After taking a tour of the two-floor store, you can rest your feet and refuel in Rose Bakery. House baked goodies are popular items and we found the Carrot Cake moist, the Fig and Almond Cake dense with just the right amount of sweetness, the Coconut Macaroon a crumbly joy, and cleansed our palates with a hot Ginger Tea, and freshly pressed Apple, Carrot and Ginger Juice.

Rum Bar, Lobby Lounge

Holding the Guinness World Record for “Bar with the World’s Largest Selection of Commercially Available Rums,” the Lobby Lounge’s Rum Bar is of high interest! A seat at the bar is the only place for a snifter of rum or rum based cocktail: conversation with the bartender is essential for getting the best tips and tales in town. Read about our rum adventure here.

Where to Relax

The newly launched beauty zone, VITA features over 20 outlets of skin and body care ranging from product specific facials, to spa sessions to the latest in medical aesthetic treatments. After a marathon of retail therapy and culinary exploration, we seek some relaxation and rejuvenation at THANN Sanctuary Spa – an award-winning brand from Thailand. Trying out both a massage and facial, find the details of our experience here.

What to See

Harbour Views

All shades of the iconic Victoria Harbour can be viewed from a number of spots around the mall. Outdoor patios, a third floor al fresco food and beverage area, restaurants and bars lined with glass walls, and even the car park, provide perching spots from which to capture the buzz on and across the waterfront. Daytime scenes are filled with cruise ships, leisure craft, junks and ferries. As the day ends however, a golden sun dips behind the Hong Kong skyline and sets the stage for the night to take hold. Into the evening the Symphony of Lights entertains eyes with a spectacular projection of lasers and multi-coloured illumination across the bay. And… it’s all contemplated from various vantage points at Harbour City.

Christmas Decorations

Always one of the first to be ready for Christmas, Harbour City Hong Kong has become a tradition for families, friends and couples to visit to get into the festive spirit. A giant interactive outdoor display is set up in November, but by December the whole interior is sparkling with ornamented trees and twinkling lights also. This year Santa’s train raises money for charity with a small entrance fee. From the inside you can take some fun kaleidoscopic style snapshots as souvenirs, while spreading good cheer to the less fortunate.
