From the reception balcony overlooking the stunning Datai Bay, we’re already lulled into a state of peace by the hypnotic sound of the waves and nature callings. A scented moist towel and home made herbal beverage refresh us as we fill out a small questionnaire indicating our personal preferences for massage strength and focus as well as noting any health concerns. The menu is extensive offering a range of body, beauty and healing treatments. We try both a massage and facial.

Escorted on a jungle-fringed path further up the hill, we’re led to our private spa villa. It’s one of only five treatment villas at V Botanical Spa. All roost on the side of the ridge, with open windows capturing beautiful panoramas of the ancient rainforest and almost perfectly round bay below. They’re all self-contained with full bathroom amenities including a tub big enough for two.

Hubby has requested the Lomi Ke Ala Hoku Massage (50 minutes, RM555), which has been traditionally performed by Hawaiian Shamans for thousands of years. In time with powerful music two therapists work in unison to sweep the length of the body in a dance-like motion. Aromatherapy oil (Tranquility is hubby’s choice) eases the way for hands and forearms to cascade over the body in waves of energy. This massage promises the added benefit of a deep state of meditation alongside an awakening within the physical body. He reports an amazing experience with four hands working at the same time, and high skill of the masseuses.

My choice, Urut Melaya(50 minutes, RM295) is a traditional Malay Massage. Long kneading strokes with thumb and palm pressure reach deep down into muscles with a focus on increasing the flow of blood in the urat (veins and arteries). Movements directed towards the heart (buka urat) aim to invigorate while strokes moving away from the heart (tutup urat) are calming. It also claims to release wind and reduce discomfort in the body. I’m impressed with the clear focused technique of my therapist. Her hands are strong and she seems to intuitively give more or less pressure where needed.

Following our massages we continue with facials. Organic Plant Stem Cell Science Skin-renewing Signature Facial – Anti-Aging Solution (60 minutes RM390) uses the latest to hit the health and beauty world, Plant Stem Cells. Said to utilize the life force of the plant, these stem cells are cultivated free of toxins providing a revolutionary level of nutrition to the skin. Edelweiss, Coneflower and Pennywort are the key ingredients used, promising lifting and firming of the skin, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and an improvement in overall skin clarity, tone and smoothness. I’m certainly extremely relaxed after the treatment and feel a couple of years younger probably just as much due to the forced rest as to the quality ingredients and expertise of my therapist.

Hubby partakes in the Nature Lymphatic Facial (60 minutes, RM340) as he’s hoping to clear his pores and reduce some under eye puffiness. Also employing organic products, this facial is designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines, ease facial tension, increase elasticity and improve lymphatic circulation. The session begins with an application of vitamins, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids to cleanse the skin. A gentle exfoliation with bioactive peat enzymes follows, and a steam treatment aids pore minimization. More hydration is said to boost the lymphatic system along with a healing phyto-nutrient wrap. An oxygenating mist and collagen and ellagic acid rich berry serum is said to tone the skin. Hubby reports the acupressure massage using lots of upward movements shows great dexterity, and also says the final anti-oxidising cloud milk cream feels super hydrating and soothing on his skin.
