Overlooking a peaceful pond, Padma Spa by Mandara meets contemporary design with splashes of Indonesian culture. Clean-cut lines define the interior, while Balinese artwork provides a profile of local culture.

Although not an enormous space, the layout feels generous in size. A circular entranceway leads guests between a shelf of Elemis products (used in facials) and, a harlequin arrangement of giant jars showcasing the natural ingredients used for body therapies. The reception counter is neighboured by the ‘library’ where spa drinks are served and relaxation is inspired by literature and low lounges.

Our couple’s treatment room is bordered with two walls of frosted glass letting in natural light, with a lower translucent panel framing a water feature and pond life. A changing room with vanity, mirror and cupboard give a tidy space for changing into disposable underwear and a robe. The far corner proffers a free-standing bathtub, surrounded by pebbled flooring, while a separate steam room and shower complete the amenities. We’re happy to see long massage beds of more than sufficient length for our tall bodies.

While sipping on ginger tea, we’re invited to choose a massage oil that appeals to us and, also select our own music! We love this feature and decide on ‘lounge,’ which proves a honeyed hum of tunes strumming our minds into pleasant contemplation. Other choices are pop, Balinese and jazz.

Treatments are Asian inspired but the exclusive UK range of Elemis beauty products ensure consistent quality across the brand. I’ve signed up for the Spa Discovery (1hr 20 mins $117USD). It begins with the long deep strokes of Balinese massage and finishes with a 30 minute Elemis Tester facial. The combination of body pampering followed by facial rejuvenation is wonderful. The Elemis products are of high quality and leave my skin feeling cleansed, smooth and hydrated.

Hubby benefits from the Spa Sampler (1hr 15 mins $86USD), which like my package, begins with a powerful Balinese massage, but finishes with a foot reflexology. Judging first by his sighs of satisfaction and then the snores (!) I gather the treatment was great!

We’re invited to slowly come off the massage beds and enter a Balinese floral bath to end the treatment. Filled with bougainvillea petals and warm water, we feel like royalty bathing in this tub. One of the staff serves us a pot of warm ginger tea and petite cookies, and then leaves us to soak for 15 minutes.

The staff and facilities of Padma Spa by Mandara have certainly catered to our every need, and if you’re in the fortunate position of staying nearby, we urge the indulgence.
