If you’re in the mood to while away a few hours, grazing on wholesome and tasty paninis, salads or pasta dishes whilst sipping on fresh smoothies or a great coffee or two, head to TTDI’s Pickle and Fig where the relaxed atmosphere (and the selection of games available to borrow from the bar) might well tempt you stay longer than you’d planned. Monica and I checked out this great little eatery on a sunny Sunday morning to sample a range of the cafe’s offerings and were far from disappointed.

We ordered a Flat White (RM10) to kick start the proceedings: made with Italian Primo Quattro beans, this was a rich and satisfying brew and when about to embark on a calorie laden food fest, it’s always reassuring to know that you can opt for low fat milk!

Once revived by the morning’s first caffeine hit, we progressed to juices and smoothies. We sampled Avocado Dates (RM15): a smoothie made with milk, yogurt, avocado and delicious little date pieces only just small enough to travel up the straw, this was a sweet and tasty treat. In contrast, the Blue Healer (RM12) was just packed full of the fruity and tart flavours of blueberries, blackberries, banana and apple and the tasty Goji Me (RM14) was made up of strawberries, goji, apple, pineapple and yogurt.

The Rotkraut Pastrami (RM21) was the first panini to arrive at our table: one of the cafe’s most popular items, this came highly recommended and we immediately understood why. A generous filling of beef pastrami, caramelised rotkraut (or red cabbage) and oodles of melted mozzarella all doused in a deliciously spicy Russian dressing came sandwiched between thick toasted slices of wholemeal bread. We were off to a promising start.

Our second choice of panini was a ‘must order’ item for me as soon as I glimpsed it on the menu. Coronation Chicken (RM18) is an all time favourite of mine that I hadn’t found anywhere else since moving to Malaysia a couple of years ago. For the uninitiated, this is a combination of chicken meat and raisins, herbs and spices in a creamy curry flavoured mayonnaise and was originally created, as the name suggests, for the coronation banquet of Queen Elizabeth II. Pickle and Fig’s interpretation of my favourite filler came with the genius touches of caramelised onions and alfalfa sprouts and was served up on fresh ciabatta. This was so good that I actually returned a few days later to eat it again.

The vegan option of Portobello Hummus Panini (RM20) was the next one that we tucked into. Favouring wholemeal bread over white, we chose this again but white bread is also an option. The tasty juices of the Portobello mushrooms were soaked up by the thick layers of hummus and the slices of red bell peppers added a peppery sweetness to this sandwich. As for the other two paninis, this came with a leafy salad and  huge potato wedges that were exactly as they should be, crunchy on the outside and deliciously fluffy within.

The Smoked Salmon Salad with Orange Vinaigrette (RM21) was simple yet very tasty. The delicately smoked salmon slices were coiled amongst the mesclun leaves, black olives, capers and the juicy orange segments which, with the citrusy dressing, gave it a zesty kick.

Now leaving salad for naughtier comfort food, it was time to tuck in to Tater Tots (RM15). A favourite item from the Snack Bites section of the menu, these were mini hash brown cubes topped with spicy salsa, guacamole, beef bacon and aioli. So tasty, but possibly best tackled on emptier stomachs, this would make a great sharing dish.

Our choice of desserts has a peanut theme simply because we just couldn’t resist either of them. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Pot was creamy and silky smooth with subtle peanut flavours in the chocolate cream, the Peanut Butter Cheesecake on the other hand, was intensely creamy, tangy, dense and perfectly complemented by the scrumptious sweet peanut butter topping. This was a real treat to end on!
